Scientific Computing Day Workshop Prerequisite

The workshops will require that you bring a computer with you, and that you have the following software installed, if you want to follow along or practice with the examples.

Each workshop uses different software, so please install and configure the software for each section that you plan on attending. All of these programs are free to download and use.

8:45 a.m – 10:15 a.m. – Introduction to Tableau Public- Instructors Joel Glogowski and Kelsey Jordan

Step 1: For this workshop you will need to download and install the Tableau Public software. The software is available for Mac OS X and Windows.

Step 2: You should also create a Tableau Public account at the Tableau Public > 

Step 3: Select “Sign-in” and from the pop-up and then select “create one now for free”.


10:30 a.m. – noon – Scientific Visualization with Python – Dr. Suranga Edirisinghe (neranjan@gsu.edu)

This workshop will use the local DICE computer system. This is accessed through a web browser and will come pre-configured with the needed software. No installation necessary.


1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.- Scientific Visualization with R – Dr. Matthew Turner (mturner46@gsu.edu)

This workshop uses two pieces of software: R and RStudio. If you are already an R user and prefer another work environment to RStudio that should be ok, too.

Step 1: You will need a recent version of the R software. Downloads are available for :

Steps 2: RStudio — **AFTER installing R** install the RStudio program. Downloads are available for :

Step 3: Once both R and RStudio are installed, run RStudio, and, in the “console”tab, execute the following two commands:

  • Command 1: install.packages(‘tidyverse’, dependencies = TRUE)
  • Command 2: install.packages(‘gcookbook’)

These commands will install the special plotting tools needed for the workshop. “If these commands don’t work when you copy and paste, please try typing them in directly.”

If you have any problems setting up R/Rstudio, contact the instructor (Matt) at mturner46@gsu.edu for help. Also, the instructor and a student assistant will be available at the workshop venue about 10-15 minutes before the start of this workshop to help with any problems.

Step 1: Download the Paraview desktop

*NOTE: the Paraview download page should show you the correct files for your computer type/operating system when you load it!

All of the above installations are fairly easy and can use default options. If you have specific questions about any of the workshops, contact the instructor.
