Install McAfee Antivirus on your Personal Windows Computer

This post details the steps to download McAfee antivirus for your personally-owned windows computer.

NOTE: If you have an older version McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, or another antivirus installed on your machine, you will need to uninstall the software before installing the new McAfee AntiVirus Plus.


  • Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
  • Uninstall any older version of McAfee or other antivirus software
  • A valid GSU email address
  • You may need your administrator’s name and password to complete the installation. If you do not have administrative access to your computer, please contact your local IT support, or the IS&T Help Center at


Install and Use McAfee Antivirus

Steps to Uninstall McAfee VirusScan Enterprise

NOTE: The steps below are based on a Windows 7 computer. Instructions will vary slightly if you are using Windows XP or Vista
  1. Click Start on the bottom left of your screen and select Control Panel.
  2. Click Uninstall a Program in the Control Panel dialog box.
  3. Search for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise and click Uninstall/Change

Steps to Install McAfee AntiVirus

  1. Go to:
  2. In the McAfee Antivirus Plus product window:
    1. Enter in the Company Code: GEO9AC08EA
    2. Enter Your GSU Email Address (e.g. or
    3. Click Get Email
  3. You will receive an email with your product key and URL to download the software. Open the URL in the email and enter the product key if it did not automatically populate, then click Submit.
  4. In the Create an Account:
    1. Enter your information to register an account with McAfee
    2. Read the terms and conditions of the Consumer Product End User License Agreement, then click
      I Agree
  5. Click Download.
  6. Click I Agree under the Consumer Products End User License Agreement.
  7. Click Download, then navigate to and open the downloaded file.
  8. NOTE: Click Yes or Run in any warning messages or pop ups that may appear
  9. Enter your login credentials for your McAfee account that you created in previous steps, then click Next.
  10. Select Complete (Recommended), then click Next.
  11. After McAfee is installed, choose whether or not to send anonymous information to McAfee by checking the box or leaving it alone. Click Next.
  12. Click Restart in the Installation Complete window to activate McAfee antivirus on your computer. You can also click “Done” in order to restart your computer later.

Steps to Perform a System Scan

  1. Right-click on the McAfee icon in the system tray and select Open McAfee AntiVirus Plus.
  2. In the McAfee AntiVirus dialog box, click on Virus and Spyware Protection
  3. Click on Scan Your PC.
  4. Select the type of scan you wish to perform in the Scan Your PC dialog box.
  5. NOTE: You may click the Scan in background button and continue working on other things while the scan takes place.

Steps to Create a Scheduled Scan

  1. Right-click on the McAfee icon in the system tray and select Open McAfee AntiVirus Plus
  2. In the McAfee AntiVirus dialog box, click on Virus and Spyware Protection
  3. Click on Scheduled Scans in the McAfee AntiVirus dialog box.
  4. Click on Schedule Your Scan.
  5. Enter the scan schedule for your PC using the options provided in the Schedule Your Scans section of the dialog box.
  6. Click Apply.


McAfee offers free Priority Telephone Support for the first 30 days after you activate the product. If you call McAfee phone support services (866-622-3911), you will need to reference the email address you used when the software was originally installed.
