Overview

The Chat tool is a real-time, text-based collaboration tool. You can use the Chat tool to brainstorm ideas, hold a question and answer period, have a debate or discussion, or organize a remote study group. There are two types of chat:

  • General (or Course) chats are public chats visible to everyone enrolled in the course they are created.
  • Personal chats are private and visible only to users who you have added to the chat’s participants list.

Using Chat

Creating A Group Chat

  1. From your Course Home page:
    1. Click Communications
    2. Click Chat

  2. Click New Chat.

  4. From the New Chat page:
    1. Create a Title for your chat
    2. Select General chat
    3. Enter a Description for your chat
    4. NOTE: Click the Advanced tab to access additional formatting functions for the Description field
    5. After you have finished, click Create Chat.

Create a Personal Chat

  1. From your Course Home page:
    1. Click Communications
    2. Click Chat

  2. Click New Chat.

  4. From the New Chat page:
    1. Create a Title for your chat
    2. Select Personal chat
    3. Enter a Description for your chat
    4. NOTE: Click the Advanced tab to access additional formatting functions for the Description field
    5. After you have finished, click Create Chat.

  6. On the Chat List page:
    1. Click the Drop-down tab next to the Chat you just created
    2. Click View Members.

  9. Select the Member(s) you would like to add.

Launch and Start a Chat Session

  1. From the Chat List page, select the Chat you would like to participate in.

  3. Within the Chat Room:
    1. Enter your message
    2. Click Send
    3. When you have finished chatting, click Exit Chat

View and Print Previous Chat Sessions

  1. From the Chat List page:
    1. Click the Drop-down Arrow of the chat you would like to explore
    2. Click View Sessions

  2. Select the Session you would like to view.

  4. Click Print to print a copy of a print transcript, or click Done.

Change Chat Session Settings

  1. From any Chat page, click Settings

  3. Change the following settings as you like, and then click Save.
    1. Chat Alias – Allows you to change text options for the display of your screen name in the chat
    2. Chat Settings: Message Order – Determines display order of messages
    3. Sound Settings – Provides sound options for incoming messages, and availability of chat participants
